Glossary
Lawn Mower is a machine that is used to cut a lawn at an even length. There are two different types of lawn mowers. The one whose blade rotates about y (vertical) axis is called as rotary movers, and the one whose blade rotates about x (horizontal) axis is called as reel or cylinder mowers. The following are some of the glossary terms that are related to lawn mowers.
Bank Cutter:
It is a variant of side wheel machines that are provided with a long handle usually of length 70 inches. This feature enables the user to cut grass even on sloppy regions.
Catalogue Mower:
This is the most commonly used type of lawn mower.
Chevron Blades:
It refers to the cutting cylinder whose blades are shallow V shaped. It has been designed to cut in the centre of the grass box and to prevent the blade from ruining the bearings.
Cutting Cylinder:
This is the feature found in many of the lawn mowers until the introduction of rotary mowers. It consists of blades that move around the vertical plane of the central axis. And it acts against the fixed blade thus forms an extension to the sole plate.
Delivery Plate:
This is another important part of a lawn mower that is mounted adjacent to the cutting cylinder. It helps in directing the grass cuttings in to the grass box. These delivery plates are offered as optional extras.
Draw Rope:
Draw ropes were used in earlier manual mowers. These manual mowers needs two men, pulling the mower fitted to the bar with the help of draw ropes.
Edger:
This is an instrument used for trimming the edges of the lawn. Edger is a part of trimmer mower which could have either individual blades or disc coulter.
Fine Turf Mower:
Fine turf mower is a special kind of mower that has been designed specifically for areas such as bowling greens, golf courses, etc. The fine cutting of the lawn is achieved by making more cuts per unit. This is calculated by the number of revolutions of the cutter (i.e.) the cutting cylinder or the number of blades that are available in the cutting cylinder.
Flail Mower:
These kinds of mowers use banks of flails rather than blades. A flail can be described as a piece of metal that is operated by beating the grass and then breaking it.
Front Runner:
Front runner is an additional extra that has been provided along with side wheel mowers. It is usually fitted to the front of the mower frame and enables the mower to roll along the grass. It enables the mower to roll along even if one of the side wheels is overhanging the edge of the lawn.
Grass Box:
This is a box made of metal or wood that is used to collect the grass cuttings. Grass box is usually mounted on front of the mower.
High Wheel Mower:
This is a type side wheel mower that has been designed specifically for cutting longer grasses. High Wheel mowers are commonly called as Hi Cut mowers and it has side wheels that are larger in diameter when compared to the normal mowers.
Hover Mower:
It is a type of rotary mower in which the machine floats over a cushion of air that has been created by the down draft from the blades.
Mulcher Mower:
This is a type of rotary mower in which the grass clippings are converted in to fine mulch with in the machine. And this function is performed by a specially designed blade.
Pony Mower:
This type of mower is usually pulled by a pony or small horse. These horses usually wore boots to protect the turf.
Pusher Units:
These pusher units are used to convert the manual mowers to the powered mowers. This unit consists of petrol engines, wheels and seats and it could be attached to the rear part of the manual mowers.
Reciprocating Knife Mower:
This is a type of mower in which the traditional cutting cylinder is replaced by a cutter bar. Cutter bars are designed with blades that move in the horizontal plane as in the traditional harvesting mowers. These cutter bars are designed in such a way that they could be replaced with a cutting cylinder. Reciprocating mowers are usually used for orchards instead of lawns.
Reel Mower:
This is a term that is used commonly for denoting the cylinder mowers.
Ride – On Mower:
This is a type of mower that has been designed to be ridden like a tractor.
Roller Mower:
Roller mower is designed in such a way that its blades are driven from a metal roller to which the power is supplied. The drive to the blades is given either through gears or chain. Roller mowers could be a powered one or a manual mower.
Rotary Mower:
It is a type of mower in which the conventional cutting cylinder is replaced by blades that are rotating in the horizontal plane.
Scraper Plate:
Scraper plate is a narrow plate or bar that has been fixed in between the handles of a roller mower. It is used for the purpose of scraping the mud from the roller.
Side Wheel Mower:
Side wheel mowers are usually used in manual mode. But it could also be used in powered mode. The blades are mounted in between the wheels and they are driven either through a gear or directly. These side wheel mowers are usually lighter in weight when compared to the heavier roller mowers.
Sole Plate:
It is a horizontal plate that is fixed on the under side of a cylinder mower. And a stationary bottom blade has been fixed with this sole plate. Sole plates are also called as cast backs or blade backs.
Trimmer:
Trimmer looks like a side wheel mower and it is used for trimming the lawn edges.
Whipple Tree:
This is a shaft that is made of wood. It usually hangs from the horse neck which enables you to attach the chains and ropes for easy pulling of mowers, seed drills, ploughs, etc.
